Produce Buying Company Limited

The Produce Buying Company Limited, PBC, has over the years carved a niche for itself in the marketing of cocoa, among other businesses. The Cocoa Industry has been the backbone of the Ghanaian Economy through its contribution to the economy of the country in terms of foreign exchange earnings, government revenues, employment creation and poverty alleviation/reduction and extension of development projects and social services to farmers.

Exports account for 30% of the Country’s GDP with Agriculture contributing around 40% of export earnings. Cocoa is the largest contributor to these earnings providing up to 75% of it. Cocoa offers direct employment (farmers, farm labourers, etc) to over Two (2) million people and indirect employment (Support to the Industry) of beyond Three (3) million.

Ghana remains the world’s second-largest producer of cocoa with the best quality which earns a premium price from its sale on the international market. PBC Limited originally exists as a Licensed Buying Company (LBC) which partakes in the Internal Marketing of Cocoa as its core business among other auxiliary businesses to complement its revenue stream. PBC Limited has over the years operated in an environment of stiff competition with other Licensed Buying Companies for cocoa from farmers. The Company however has remained the highest cocoa purchaser for COCOBOD among the other LBCs with a market share of about 31%.

“Develop and maintain PBC Limited as the most economically viable service provider in Cocoa and other agricultural produce, hospitality and agro-processing in the West African sub-region”.

Mission

1. Improve the supply chain management in the purchase of quality cocoa, shea nuts and other agricultural produce.
2. Develop the estates of the Company to provide quality hospitality and warehousing services
3. Develop the shea nut industry to process shea nuts into quality butter and other derivatives for the international market.

Achievements

The company’s achievements on the Ghana Club 100 Rankings over the years are as follows:

• 2003 - Second (2nd) on Ghana Club 100 Ranking.
• 2004 - Third (3rd) on Ghana club 100 Ranking.
• 2005 - Twenty-Fifth (25th) on Ghana Club 100 Ranking.
• 2008 - Eighty-Ninth (89th) on Ghana Club 100 Ranking.
• 2009 - Thirty-Forth (34th) on Ghana Club 100 Ranking. • 2010 - First (1st) on Ghana Club 100 Ranking.
• 2011 - First (1st) on Ghana Club 100 Ranking.
• 2012 - Forth (4th) on Ghana Club 100 Ranking.
• PBC Limited was also adjudged Leader in the Agricultural and Agribusiness Sector by the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre in 2012.
• An International Quality Award in the Gold Category was conferred on the Company on 11th March 2012 in Geneva, Switzerland by the Business Initiative Directions (BID), an international awarding organization based in Spain.
• Additionally, in 2012, the Managing Director, Mr Kojo Atta-Krah was honoured as leader of Africa’s Leading Agribusiness Company by the Africa Leadership Magazine in Atlanta Georgia, USA.
